Here at C W Sellors, our entrancing Bloom jewellery collection is brimming with elegant mother of pearl designs shaped into the motif of the popular four-leaf clover. But have you ever wondered why the icon is associated with being so lucky? And how did the four-leaf clover become linked to historical celebrations like St Patrick’s Day? We have the answers. And while we go through the myths and truths about the lucky symbol, we’ll also showcase some of the latest additions to our Bloom jewellery collection.
The four-leaf clover is a small plant with four distinctive-looking leaves. It has been around for centuries and is supposed to hold special lucky powers. In the early days of Ireland, Celtic priests carried the three-leaf version, or shamrock, believing it could help them see evil spirits. The four-leaf versions were Celtic charms and were also thought to have magical powers back then. Both the four-leaf clover and the Shamrock are associated with St Patrick’s Day. The plant does not naturally produce the four-leaf type, which is what makes it so rare. These imperfections are thought to stand for faith, love, hope and luck. Ireland is also thought to have the highest population of the plant, hence the saying “the luck of the Irish”. And here’s the bit you really wanted to know. The reason why they’re so lucky is because you have around a 1 in 10,000 chance of finding one! Not here at C W Sellors, though.

The Appeal of Mother of Pearl
It’s hard to imagine that nestled deep inside the shells of molluscs at the bottom of our serene oceans, one of the most beautiful natural phenomena occurs. Mother of pearl is found in the coating of oyster shells and is classed as a mineral. The formation is also known as “nacre” and is famed for its stunning sheen, emanating in tones of pale blue, purple and pink, which makes it perfect for incorporating into elegant pieces of jewellery here at C W Sellors. Its adaptability enables our skilled craftsmen here in our workshops to experiment with many unique and alluring designs. Similar to Moonstone for its visual properties, mother of pearl interacts beautifully with the scintillating effect of a diamond when the two are paired together. This is one reason why you’ll see so many handcrafted designs here in our online catalogue that combine the two together. The mineral dazzles in an array of colours, creating an unpredictable finish in each design.
