Bringing colour and transparency to their popular 5 Sports watch, Seiko launch a duo of visually unique watches designed in collaboration with Japanese artist Kosuke Kawamura. The Seiko 5 Sports Kosuke Kawamura Skeleton watches, found under references SRPJ41 and SRPJ43, revive elements of the brand’s legendary 1970’s Time Sonar watch with a coloured transparent dial exposing the day and date wheels beneath.
Graphic designer, art director, collage artist. The list of Kosuke Kawamura’s talents appear never ending. Following his early successes in Japan back in the 2000’s, Kosuke Kawamura and his work has now appeared all around the world leading to collaborations with video game developers, musicians and brands like Adidas, G-Shock and Gundam. He is most famously known for his collages which he began creating digitally using Photoshop and Illustrator before eventually moving towards the traditional methods of shredding magazines. His urban-inspired talents are combined with elements of Seiko’s Time Sonar watch from the 1970’s to create the new duo of Seiko 5 Sports Kosuke Kawamura Skeleton watches.
Both the Seiko 5 Sports Kosuke Kawamura Skeleton SRPJ41 and SRPJ43 watches look significantly different to their classic counterparts for their dial and bezel. The dials in particular hark back to the Time Solar watch which was notorious for its tinted glass dial and exposed day and date discs. The Seiko 5 Sports Kosuke Kawamura Limited Editions are exactly the same, both translucent and coloured but enjoying two shades of tint rather than one. The Seiko 5 Sports Kosuke Kawamura Skeleton SRPJ41 watch opts for a vivid orange and green scheme while the Seiko 5 Sports Kosuke Kawamura Skeleton SRPJ43 watch stays a little more classic with grey and green.
You can clearly see Kosuke Kawamura’s input in the creation of the dial’s where black graphic printed elements frame the day and date window and the “automatic” lettering at 9 o’clock. The tinted glass is also adorned with a subtle but effective concentric texture which creates a really cool smoked effect. The dials also reveal a colourful inner flange with red markings, including a red triangle indicator for the 0 numeral.
Also noticeably new to the Seiko 5 Sports Kosuke Kawamura Skeleton SRPJ41 and SRPJ43 watches is the bezel which again debuts a distinct graphic finish. Alternating black and silver lines adorn the circumference broken up by the Arabic numerals for the 60 minute scale. The bezel remains unidirectional and features a luminous marker at 12 o’clock. The rest of the case appears familiar with a 42.5mm stainless steel architecture, screw in crown at 4 o’clock, screwed exhibition case back and a water resistant rating of 100 metres. The well-known calibre 4R36 automatic winding movement powers both models offering a 41-hour power reserve. Both Seiko 5 Sports Kosuke Kawamura Skeleton Limited Edition watches are completed by a three-row link stainless steel bracelet and folding clasp.
Reference SRPJ41 is limited to 3,000 pieces while reference SRPJ43 is rarer at only 500 pieces.
