A trio of new limited editions make up Angelus’ latest collection, the Angelus Chronodate, which includes two titanium and a rose gold model. The series pays tribute to a famous chronograph calibre first presented 80 years ago, one which featured a rare bi-compax display and a pointer date indication.
Founded in 1891 in Le Locle, Switzerland by the brothers Stoltz, Angelus has marked many first in its century-and-a-half history. One of these includes the “Chronodato” in 1942 which marked the brand’s first ever wristwatch chronograph with calendar. It’s unique combination of chronograph and peripheral date cements its cult-classic status of today, and fans of the highly collectible design are in for a treat as the complication is revived with the launch of the new Angelus Chronodate series. The collection features three watches, two in titanium and one in rose gold, all limited to 25 pieces each, beautifully fusing together the historical elements of its predecessor with the contemporary landscapes of the brand’s modern creations.
Starting with the case of the Angelus Chronodate watches, the perfectly rounded titanium or 18 carat rose gold case mimics the angular construction of other modern-day Angelus watches with a 42.5mm diameter engineered from a several durable components. The container in which the movement sits within is made of carbon composite to allow for additional rigidity and lightness while the chronograph push-pieces, case middle and bezel are cut from the same matte black material. Around this container, a six component case is finished in red gold or titanium and features several cut outs where you can glimpse some of the carbon composite container within.
The case of the Angelus Chronodate watch also features a large crown at the 3 o’clock which extends beyond the case and features a band of rubber in red for the titanium models and black for the rose gold to ensure easy manipulation. The case sits on the wrist at 14.25mm in height which is inclusive of the box-shaped sapphire crystal glass placed above the dial. The glass is treated to a double anti-reflective coating and helps ensure a water resistant rating of 30 metres.
The Angelus Chronodate Titanium watches come in a choice of two dial colours: blue or opaline white. The Angelus Chronodate Rose Gold watch on the other hand is available only with a blue centrepiece. Each dial showcases a stunning grained finish like that of frosted glass which contrasts to the rhodium-plated hardware of the titanium models and the gold-coloured details of the rose gold reference. The hands and hour markers are set with white Superluminova emitting a blue glow, black minutes track and the brand’s rhodium-plated applied logo. The two subsidiary dials for the small seconds and 30 minutes counter are also circled with a black and sloped three-dimensional track. Subtle touches of red are added for the pointer date indicator and on the 30 minutes chronograph counter.
Powering the bi-compax layout of each Angelus Chronodate watch is the Calibre A500, a movement engineered by La Joux-Perret and based on the architecture of the Valjoux 7750. It promises a frequency of 28,800vph, 26 jewels and a power reserve of 60 hours. The chronograph also operates using a column wheel with horizontal coupling to avoid excess thickness. Turning the watch over and you can admire the movement through another example of boxed sapphire crystal glass. Its finishing fits the contemporary design of previous Angelus movements including sandblasted, micro-bead blasted and NAC treated plates and bridges and a tungsten or tungsten and gold rotor moulded into the Angelus logo.
Completing the Angelus Chronodate watches is a rubber strap Cordura-like embossing which mimics thanks of textile straps. The titanium and blue reference opts for a matching blue rubber band while the titanium and white watch elects a black rubber strap. Both are fitted with titanium folding clasps. Lastly, the red gold watch closes with a blue rubber strap and an 18ct gold folding buckle.
