Gemstones
Whilst browsing our Love Letters jewellery collection, you may have come across letters that incorporate special stones like Blue John. This semi-precious gemstone was discovered around two thousand years ago, making it a rare and alluring stone to wear as part of an innovative piece of jewellery. This variety of calcium fluorite boasts distinctive purple, yellow and blue banding throughout its structure, running deep into the stone and further enhancing its allure and uniqueness. Our unrivalled craftsmanship here at C W Sellors and our desire for perfection when it comes to craftsmanship and quality are unmatched. The Blue John gemstone is associated with wealth and beauty and has been displayed in stately homes throughout history. It was made famous by 18th century designer Mathew Boulton of Birmingham who contributed to its popularity in a huge way. The only known deposit of this rare and natural gemstone is in the heart of the Peak District near Castleton. The many hills that have formed below Mam Tor are created by landslips and it is opposite this location where the beautiful Blue John can be found in Treak Cliff Cavern. Once the mineral is extracted, it is carefully graded and sorted by hand before being polished and transformed into stunning creations like those from our Love Letters jewellery collection. Whether your preferred choice of metal is sterling silver or yellow gold our Love Letters creations can be enjoyed with a cabochon of stunning Blue John. The gemstone sits in a crevice or along a swirling surface of metal in each letter, adding a pop of colour to the design.

The gemstone has a fascinating heritage and is loved for its tactile beauty and its mirror-like polish. Whitby Jet is an organic material, which was formed over many years from compacted wood belonging to the Monkey Puzzle Tree or Araucaria Tree. This tree once decorated the entire coast of North East England. When it broke off into the sea, it became driftwood and sank to the depths of the ocean where it became covered with sediment and decaying organisms. Void of oxygen, the hard black gemstone we have all come to know and love, was formed over 180 million years ago. Collectors have been appreciating the heritage and history of Whitby Jet, thus today there are both contemporary and traditional designs to enjoy throughout our fine jewellery ranges.
