September Birthstone: Discover Sapphires

Jewellery & Watch News

The birthstone for September is Sapphire, which is largely characterised by its exceptional range of colours and vibrancy. The September birthstone is not limited to the royal blue that the stone is most known for, despite its classic beauty. Those with a birthday in September or have a special occasion this month are truly fortunate, most importantly those celebrating their 40th wedding anniversaries. Discover the Sapphire history, Sapphire properties and Sapphire jewellery with C W Sellors this September.

History of Sapphires

Sapphires have such a powerful history, including alchemy and health benefits to wearing the stone. The history of the precious gemstone dates back to the 7th Century BC of which research suggests Sri Lanka is the original source. During the Middle Ages, Sapphires were kept on the owner as they believed the stone protected them from disease and harm whilst used as an antidote for poison. Despite this, it wasn’t until the 18th and 19th centuries that the demand significantly rose simultaneously when the demand for diamonds was low. This time marks when stone carvers and Italian Goldsmiths began to use the stone with purpose and created art in their craft.

The sapphire has been linked to royalty for centuries, initially in ancient Greece when the Kings and Queens believed that a blue sapphire would protect the owner, prevent poverty and protect them from harm. This was a belief that continued to the wealthy and influential individuals during the Renaissance period. Continuing with the link between blue sapphires and royalty, the association was heavily reinforced by Prince Charles in 1981, who proposed the iconic blue sapphire ring to Lady Diana Spencer. The ring was inspired by a sapphire brooch that was given to Queen Victoria by Prince Albert, which was also worn to the wedding as a ‘something blue’ memento. The famous 12ct Ceylon Sapphire ring has passed through the generations, now worn by Lady Diana’s daughter-in-law, Kate Middleton.

Properties of Sapphires

Despite the misconception that Sapphires are primarily royal blue, the stone boasts an extensive rainbow of colours that are naturally produced, including blue, pink, yellow, orange, purple, green, black and white. Red rubies are not technically considered a sapphire, although chemically they are identical. One of the rarest forms is the Opalescent, which radiates a cosmic iridescent glow appearance, caused by the microscopic particles interacting with light. The Star Sapphire is also amongst the rarest, which displays a reflected star of light upon the surface which is called an asterism.

The September birthstone is placed at 9 on the Mohs Hardness Scale which means the Sapphire is the hardest of all coloured gemstones – only second to Diamonds. Because of this characteristic, sapphires are incredibly durable and have a low risk of being damaged. This durability for everyday wear increases the popularity of modern alternative engagement rings, particularly if a coloured stone is preferred with such unique beauty.
