If you remember the original Garmin EPIX, you’ve been a lover of smartwatches for quite some time. It was launched almost seven years ago and made history as Garmin’s first ever hands-free navigator with a high-resolution colour touchscreen and preloaded mapping for Europe. Continuing the collection’s legacy is the latest generation of EPIX watches suitably named the Garmin EPIX 2.
Just like its forerunner, the new Garmin EPIX 2 watch is perfectly designed as a rugged and ready outdoor GPS watch with a huge range of adventure-ready features equipped within. The detailing of the full-colour topographic maps is still insanely realistic with road networks, forests, terrain contours, elevation information, lakes and points of interest all accessible on the wrist. A huge improvement though comes from the EPIX 2’s new AMOLED display which compared to the previous EPIX offers more vivid picture quality and renders faster motion response.
Another change in the Garmin EPIX 2 comes in its case and strap designs. Previously, the EPIX was distinctively square shaped with simple chemically strengthened glass, stainless steel and fibre reinforced polymer. For the Garmin EPIX 2 watches, the aesthetics have been improved dramatically and rather than looking like a hands-free navigator, it looks like a premium smartwatch just as worthy of a night on the town as a hike up a mountain. Three of the designs are engineered from titanium for a lightweight and scratch resistant finish, two finished in a Black DLC coating and one left bare. All three are also equipped with sapphire crystal glass. The fourth model however opts for a classic stainless steel case and less durable Corning® Gorilla® Glass DX.
Hidden within the cases of the new Garmin EPIX watches is a world of luxury smartwatch functionality. For outdoor explorers, there’s Multi-GNSS support with GPS, GLONASS and Galileo, ABC sensors, an acclimation widget which shows your current elevation, acclimated elevation and correlated Pulse Ox2, heart rate3 and respiration rate, so you can see how you’re holding up to the current elevation and the iconic ClimbPro feature. You can also expect multi-continent TopoActive maps where you can view terrain contours, elevations, summits, parks, coastlines, rivers, lakes and other geographical features.
As for fitness and wellbeing features, the Garmin EPIX Gen 2 watches deliver a Pulse Ox sensor, a wrist based heart rate monitor, respiration tracking, stress tracking, sleep score and advanced sleep monitoring, hydration tracking, sports apps, animated workouts and Garmin’s Body Battery Energy Monitor which uses all these trackers together to gauge when you’re ready to be active or when you may need to rest. The Garmin EPIX also introduces the brand’s newest HIIT workout profile, Garmin Coach, Visual Race Predictor, PacePro technology, VO2 max, performance metrics, real time stamina and much more.
