The Story of the Aappaluttoq Mine in Greenland
Before we get into the magical details of our stunning new Greenland Ruby and Sapphire Cross Hearts jewellery collection, we first need to travel overseas to the icy giant known as Greenland. Here, on the world’s largest island sitting between the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans, east of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago is a set of formations believed to be nearly three billion years old. The site is known as Aappaluttoq, taking its name from the word ‘red’ in Greenlandic for the large amount of red corundum crystals found within the earth. These red and pink sapphires are also joined by a selection of rare blue sapphires known as Greenland Northern Light sapphires.
The ruby and sapphire deposit found in Aappaluttoq, Greenland was originally discovered during the 1960’s by the Danish Gemological Survey but permits to mine were not approved until 2016. The mining, which eventually began in 2017, is undertaken by LNS Greenland A/S, a sister company of Greenland Ruby, who have confirmed their commitment to responsible practices within mining. Environmental, human rights, and labour best practices are taken into account every step of the way; they are devoted to preserving and respecting the region, refilling the waterway and removing all equipment and buildings once the work is complete. The majority of the workforce is also made up of Greenlandic people. In 2019, Greenland Ruby also became the first coloured gemstone miner to join the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC). This is guaranteed by the Certificate of Origin supplied with each Greenland Sapphire or Greenland Ruby necklace.

Each gemstone is a heart-shaped cabochon embraced within a 18 carat yellow gold cross which hangs from a matching yellow gold chain.
The Northern Lights Greenland Sapphire necklaces are enchanting, taking their name from the dancing green, purple and blue lights that appear in Greenland’s sky during the winter months. In the same way, Northern Lights Greenland Sapphire gemstones range from navy to lavender purple in colour adorned in subtle, lighter inflections. The Greenland Pink Sapphire necklaces are gorgeously feminine, boasting a rich, lipstick pink hue to perfectly complete the romantic heart motif while the Greenland Ruby necklaces elect a rich, dark blood red colour.
