Jewellery & Watch News
Louis Erard’s first launch of 2023 has arrived and we are treated to three new beautiful dial colours for their 39mm La Petite Seconde watch. Each colour brings with it a message, one that Louis Erard has been reinforcing for many years now: that fine watchmaking, no matter the quality of execution or reliability, does not need to break the bank. Let’s take a look at the new Louis Erard La Petite Seconde Violette, Bleu Glacier and Bleu Nuit watches…
The Louis Erard Petite Seconde watch has been the base for many of the Swiss watchmaker’s releases of late. They launched the first pair of 39mm models last year, one with a beautiful silver dial and another in elegant terracotta. These watches were unconventional and classic at the same time, composed with multi-level dials, statement fir-tree hands and perfectly round cases. These same characteristics were then combined with unique stone dials in the Louis Erard Le Petite Seconde Malachite, Aventurine and Lapis Lazuli watches and a whimsical ghost character in the Louis Erard x Seconde/Seconde Limited Edition. Equally as brilliant, the new Louis Erard La Petite Seconde Violette, Bleu Glacier and Bleu Nuit watches fulfil the current trend in the luxury watch world for bright dial colours.
The Louis Erard La Petite Seconde Violette watch is arguably the most unconventional out of the new trio of limited editions. Purple is rarely seen in traditional watchmaking circles, favoured more by contemporary artists, but Louis Erard proves that going beyond normal codes and combining the modern hue with a traditional aesthetic can have satisfying results. The rich violet display joins with a matching purple strap crafted from grained calfskin leather. In contrast, the Louis Erard La Petite Seconde Bleu Nuit watch marks the return of a classic. Deep navy is a colour that has been used in luxury watchmaking for many years and it contrasts beautifully to the rhodium-plated hands and numerals and stainless steel case. Finally, the Louis Erard Petite Seconde Bleu Glacier watch delivers a colour typically reserved for very high-end watches. The ice blue centrepiece is joined by dark blue numerals and hands to match with the dark blue stitching and lining on the pastel blue calf leather strap.
The overall layout of the dials for the Louis Erard La Petite Seconde Violette, Bleu Glacier and Bleu Nuit watches replicate those we’ve seen before. There’s a gorgeous raised centre with satin-finishing bordered by a recessed and brushed hours track. At 6 o’clock, a snailed counter provides the small seconds set with its own fir-tree shaped hand to match those at the centre for the hours and minutes. The dials are protected by domed sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective treatment on both sides and 39mm stainless steel cases with smooth, fixed bezels, curved lugs and 50 metre water resistant ratings.
Powering the Louis Erard La Petite Seconde Violette, Bleu Glacier and Bleu Nuit watches is the Sellita SW261-1 calibre. Alongside the hours, minutes and small seconds function, the élaboré grade movement comes with 31 jewels, a frequency of 28,800vph and a power reserve of 38 hours. You can view the movement through the case back of each limited edition including the well-known black lacquered Louis Erard symbol adorning the openworked oscillating weight.
The new Louis Erard La Petite Seconde Violette, Bleu Glacier and Bleu Nuit watches are part of a limited series which will see 100-150 pieces created each year.
