Jewellery & Watch News
The iconic Rado Captain Cook undergoes several contemporary changes as part of the brand’s new 2021 collection. For the first time the retro-inspired piece is upsized to a formidable 43 millimetres, dressed entirely in high-tech ceramic and equipped with a smoked skeleton dial.
Prior to the new Rado Captain Cook High-Tech Ceramic collection, the Rado Captain Cook watch has endured several transformation since its release in 1962. When it was first relaunched by the Swiss brand back in 2017 during the Baselworld tradeshow, it was designed as a “reissue” of the original and shortly later its vintage aesthetic was combined into an even larger 45mm piece as the HyperChrome Captain Cook. More recently, the formula had hit a real sweet spot with the 42mm-wide Captain Cook Automatic which was first presented in stainless steel and then later introduced in bronze. Now, these same design codes are replicated but with an increased case size of 43mm and a fully high-tech ceramic case.
Anyone remotely familiar with the Rado brand will have seen their tag line: “Master of Materials”. These three words hint at their long history in researching and applying progressive materials to their designs. Most renowned of all of them is Rado’s high-tech ceramic. Lightweight, scratch resistant, versatile, stylish and hypoallergenic, ceramic is the very material of choice for the latest Rado Captain Cook which has been released four different variations.
The first Rado Captain Cook High-Tech Ceramic watch comes under reference R32127162 and features an all-black high-tech ceramic case with a matching black ceramic bracelet and a rose gold PVD bezel. Reference R32127152 is exactly the same, but instead has a classic stainless steel bezel and matching silver accents on the dial. Following on from that, R32127156 also has a black high-tech ceramic case and bracelet and stainless steel bezel but opts for a black rubber strap for securing on the wrist.
The last reference, and the one that stands out the most in the Rado Captain Cook Ceramic collection, is R32128202. This design is engineered from the brand’s plasma high tech ceramic which boasts all the same advantages of standard ceramic but delivers an otherworldly metallic shine. Its dark grey colouring is paired with a blue ceramic bezel with a hardened polished stainless steel trim and a matching grey plasma high-tech ceramic bracelet.
All four iterations are paired with a new skeleton dial, a design that has yet to be done in Rado Captain Cook history. Through black tinted sapphire crystal, you get a ghostly view of the Rado R734 automatic winding beneath. Paired beside the familiar applied indexes, inner flange and large arrow-shaped Superluminova hands for hours and minutes, the Swiss made movement guarantees a healthy power reserve of 80 hours and beats at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour.
Each Rado Captain Cook High-Tech Ceramic is also adorned with a 60 minute scale on the bezel, a screw in crown and a screw down exhibition case back still worthy of a 300 metre water resistant rating. Like other Rado Captain Cook watches before it, the new ceramic references feature the iconic moving anchor symbol on the dial at 12 o’clock. Set against a synthetic ruby plate, the subtle yet charming emblem rocks and spins with every movement of the wrist.
