Hands-on with the Bremont Dambuster Limited Edition

Jewellery & Watch News

Bremont have always had a soft spot for preserving the history of aviation, whether its tributing aircrafts through limited edition releases or physically incorporating metal from planes into their watches. With the new Bremont Dambuster watch, the British watch manufacturer does both, paying tribute to the Lancaster Bomber and the Dambusters Raid while also dressing every owner of the watch with a pair of cufflinks featuring aluminium from the original airframe of one of the Lancaster bombers.

As part of its partnership with Britain’s Ministry of Defence (MoD), Bremont has chosen to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Lancaster Bomber first seeing service in 1942, and the subsequent Dambusters Raid in 1943 with the release of its latest limited edition, the Bremont Dambuster. The design pays tribute to one of our country’s most historic events, one that saw 133 brave aircrew in 19 Lancaster Bombers perform a dangerous bombing raid during World War II. The mission was successful in destroying the M hne and Eder dams and damaging the Sorpe dam in the Ruhr Valley of Germany which were vital in supplying water to German war production facilities. As we expected, Bremont have done a fantastic job of honouring the event with the Bremont Dambuster Limited Edition filled with several gestures nodding to the men and aircrafts involved.

Bremont Co-Founder Nick English comments, “Undoubtedly wartime has prompted some of the greatest moments of ingenuity and innovation in history and the story of the Dambusters Raid exemplifies this beautifully.Equally the agility, skill and precision demonstrated by the 617 Squadron in the successful deployment of the bouncing bombs continues to amaze me. As we approach the 80th anniversary of the raid we wanted to pay tribute to both Barnes Wallis and the brave men who fought for crown and country, 53 of whom lost their lives. We are proud to be donating one of these Limited Edition timepieces for auction to raise money for the RAF Benevolent Fund,an incredible charity that has been supporting members of the RAF Family formore than 100 years.”

The case back of the Bremont Dambuster watch is home to a huge range of detailing designed in commemoration of the Avro Lancaster plane and the squadron that flew in it. It includes a large engraving of the plane itself including the beams of the aircraft’s low level lights alongside the heraldic badge of the 617 squadron. Around the edge, the case back also features the names of the 8 Lancaster Bombers that never returned. Turning the design over also reveals its limited edition status of 232 pieces which cleverly nods to the speed at which the Lancaster had to fly at in order to successfully bounce the bomb.

From the front, the Bremont Dambuster delivers the very aesthetics we’d expect from a Dirty Dozen-inspired watch including a 42mm steel case and a black military dial. The case has been carefully engineered using hardened stainless steel with a smooth fixed unadorned bezel, domed sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective treatment and a screw in crown assisting in a 100 metre water resistant rating. Meanwhile, the dial features a combination of white and vintage-coloured Superluminova on the Arabic numerals and nickel plated hour and minute hands.

Contrasting against the black dial and the matching black subsidiary dials, the Bremont Dambuster watch utilises a bold red central chronograph seconds hand at the centre and a white bordered date window at 6 o’clock. Powering these complications is the Calibre BE-51AE automatic winding movement, a COSC-certified calibre with a 48 hour power reserve and frequency of 28,800vph. The highlight of the movement however is that of the Monopusher chronograph manipulated using the large pusher at 2 o’clock.

Alongside the release of every 232-piece Bremont Dambuster Limited Edition, you’ll also get a set of elegant silver Avro Lancaster Cufflinks incorporating aluminium from the original airframe of Lancaster B.VII NX611 ‘Just Jane’. The material was removed recently during the restoration of the Just Jane’s rudder assembly and has been kindly gifted to the British watch manufacturer as part of this limited edition launch.
