The Longines Legend Diver for 2022 with Red, Beige, Grey and Blue Dials

Jewellery & Watch News

The Longines Legend Diver is one of the Swiss watch manufacturer’s most popular vintage-inspired instruments, bringing together the essential features of a diving watch with retro aesthetics worthy of the 1960’s. For 2022, the brand reveals a selection of colourful new models featuring gradient dials in sand beige, ash grey, royal blue and vivid burgundy.

Often referred to as the LLD, the Longines Legend Diver is an obvious best-seller for the Saint-Imier based brand. Placed in their Heritage collection, the design is modelled after a Longines watch first created during the 1950’s where the needs of both professional and recreational diving watches was at an all time high. Fast forward to 2007, and the Longines Legend Diver revived a specific model known as the Ref. 7042, a SuperCompressor, launched in 1959 noted by its 42mm case, painted Arabic numerals, black dial and internal rotating bezel manipulated by a second crown. The original LLD remains a hugely collectible timepiece, faithfully reproducing the 59’ model to a T. Ever since, the brand has launched several editions of the Longines Legend Diver include smaller 36mm variants, blue and brown gradient dials and one of our favourite watches of last few years, the Longines Legend Diver Bronze.

For 2022, Longines extend their vintage divers watch collection even further with the launch of five new Legend Diver Gradient Dial watches. The first two deliver the classically proportioned 42mm stainless steel case with a choice of a sand beige dial or an ash-grey dial, both fitted with tone-on-tone fabric straps with the grey edition created in the popular NATO style. The other three Longines Legend Diver watches sit on the wrist at 36mm and are reinterpreted with burgundy, sand beige or royal blue dials. The former two come with matching fabric straps while the blue model is presented on a coordinated leather strap.

Their gradient dials are easily the main attraction of these 2022 Longines releases with glossy centres that gradually darken in colour at the edges.  The familiar retro-styled hands return with luminous material on the ends to match with the glow in the hour markers interspersed with luminescent squares and Arabic numerals finished in Superluminova. The internal rotating bezel is also presented on each dial of the Longines Legend Diver watch finished in vintage-coloured beige.

For the larger 42mm Longines Legend Diver watches, you can expect a height of 12.7mm and a lug-to-lug measurement of 52.4mm. The specifications are what we’ve come to expect from the series including the L888.5 automatic winding movement within. Based on the ETA A31.L11 calibre, we’re warranted a 72 hour power reserve, a frequency of 25,200vph and an anti-magnetic silicon balance spring.

Meanwhile, the 36mm Longines Legend Diver watches bring the stainless steel cases a little lower on the wrist with a height of 11.9mm. There’s also a slightly different movement, this time the Calibre L592 based on the ETA A20.L11. This offers the same time and date complication with a 42 hour power reserve, frequency of 28,800vph and an anti-magnetic silicon balance spring. Both sizes also come with screw in crowns, screw down case backs, sapphire crystal glass and a 300 metre water resistant rating.
