The best-selling tactical training smartwatch, the Garmin Tactix, is launched into its seventh generation offering a more resilient and practical design worthy of its heritage. Suitably named the Garmin Tactix 7, the new series of outdoor smartwatches make history with a solar-powered dial, upgraded health monitoring and a unique built-in multi-LED flashlight.
The unveiling of the Garmin Fenix 7 collection earlier this year was undoubtedly one of the biggest launches for Garmin and the whole smartwatch industry for several years. The designs introduced the iconic Fenix architecture with new titanium casings, solar-powered displays and for the largest model the Fenix 7X, a brand-new integrated flashlight feature. For the new Garmin Tactix 7 watches, many of these same technologies are unified with the high-grade military-approved designs of previous Tactix smartwatches. Let’s take a look at the new Garmin Tactix 7 collection…
There are currently three Garmin Tactix 7 smartwatches on offer: the Standard Edition, Pro Edition and Pro Ballistics Edition. Compared to the Garmin Fenix 7 Standard Edition, the Pro and Ballistic Editions feature solar-charging displays and as such a significantly improved battery life. In smartwatch mode, the standard model delivers a power reserve of 28 days which increases to 38 days in the Pro editions. On top of that Garmin Tactix 7 Ballistic Edition comes with additional software from Applied Ballistics. Other than that, the rest of the technical spec are the same across the entire collection.
All three Garmin Tactix 7 watches remain ruggedly built to military standards of MIL-STD-810 helped by their imposing 51mm architecture which includes a scratch resistant titanium bezel, fibre-reinforced polymer case and titanium case back. The sunlight-visible transflective MIP display of the Standard Edition and the solar-powered Power Lens displays of the Pro and Ballistic Editions are also protected by sapphire crystal glass for additional resistance to knocks and scratches. The former also pairs to the wrist by a black rubber strap while the latter two opt for black nylon bands.
One of the more recent ground-breaking advances from Garmin is that of the integrated flashlight feature which first debuted within the Garmin Fenix 7 several months ago. Beautifully cohesive with the side of the case, so much so that it is barely noticeable when not in use, the multi LED flashlight provides access to a steady beam of light in either green or white with just a simple double tap of the light key. This feature is incredibly useful for late night tactical training missions or for simply when you need to take the bins out in the dark.
The Garmin Tactix 7 watches also delivers several familiar features of past references including the night vision function which lets you to switch between daytime view to night time view, allowing you to read the screen even while wearing night vision goggles. There’s also the infamous stealth mode feature which stops storing and sharing your GPS position for moments when your security might be at risk. The kill switch feature also remains which lets you wipe all user memory from device as well as the Jumpmaster mode for adrenaline junkies, a tool for jumping from high altitudes which lets you calculate release points according to military guidelines and navigate you to your objective. There’s also dual-position formatting, projected waypoints and weather navigation.
A must-have for a tactical training smartwatch, the Garmin Tactix 7 also boasts a huge range of navigational tools including multi-band GNSS support (GPS, GLONASS and Galileo) for improved position accuracy in areas where GNSS signals are reflected, weak or typically don't penetrate, ABC sensors for altimeter, barometer and compass and preloaded TopoActive maps from your region as well as a public land boundaries tool so you know that you’re venturing where you’re supposed to be.
