Just in time for the extended bank holiday weekend happening next week, British watch manufacturer Fears reinvents their popular Brunswich watch with a royal purple dial in celebration of Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. The suitably named Fears Brunswich Jubilee Edition watch is not limited, but a numbered edition that will only be produced during the year 2022.
The Fears Brunswich was the second release following the brand’s revival in 2016 and their first range of mechanical timepieces for the modern day. Before today, the collection revealed a quartet of designs, two classic stainless steel models with a white or salmon pink dial, and a duo of more luxurious platinum models both with anthracite grey dials with one dressed in diamond dot indexes. Retaining the affordability of the steel models, the new Fears Brunswich Jubilee Edition watch revives the iconic cushion-shaped case with a sweeping architecture, graceful curves and a polished finish. The case sits on the wrist at 38mm and is machined from 316L stainless steel. There’s also sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective treatment and a traditional onion-shaped crown for manually winding the movement inside.
The main centrepiece of the Fears Brunswick Jubilee Edition watch is of course the dial which wonderfully celebrates the 70-year reign of Queen Elizabeth II with a royal purple hue. The colour is largely associated with royalty and in particular has been the shade used to commemorate the Jubilee occasion across all the country. It sounds like achieving the perfect shade of purple was no easy feat, so much so, that it was expertly combined in Germany and created using a special kind of lacquer with different drops of pigment to achieve the exact tone.
The purple dial continues to impress with a stunning sunburst finish which makes the royal tones appear light and darker in different light. The recessed small seconds dial at 6 o’clock is also finished in purple and is complemented by snailed decoration. Around the circumference, applied numerals in ‘Edwin’ typeface are added by hand and given a diamond polish for a mirror shine. The Fears Brunswich Jubilee Edition watch’s dial also features the iconic skeletonised hands for the hours and minutes, also diamond-polished and layered in rhodium.
Powering the hours, minutes and small seconds of the Fears Brunswich Jubilee Edition watch is the Swiss made, manual winding ETA 7001 movement. Despite being made in Switzerland, Fears ensure the movement is serviced and finished in Britain before being installed into their watches. Some of the movement’s decoration includes Cotes de Genève striping and rhodium plating, but sadly these are unseen due to the closed case back. Securing the special edition to the wrist is two straps, the first a Bristol leather band in royal purple with contrasting platinum-coloured stitching and the second, a Barenia leather strap in muted pewter grey.
The Fears Brunswich Jubilee Edition watch is not part of a limited run but is only available to order for a limited time. In honour of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, the design will only be made during the year 2022 with each design carrying a unique edition number on the case back.
