Jewellery & Watch News

C W Sellors Favourites Whitby Jet

In preparation for Whitby Goth Weekend at the end of this month which we are incredibly excited about, we thought we would delve in further with the introduction of one of our favourite gemstones, Whitby Jet.

Whitby Jet's history dates to 1500 BC, and it has been used by various cultures, including the Romans, who utilized it to make dagger handles, carvings, and an assortment of jewellery and accessories. This was because of the properties of the stone which allowed it to be easily carved with the metal tools they used. The popularity of the stone rose immensely during the 19th century because of Whitby’s railway links, in turn allowing new holidaymakers to enjoy the beauty of Whitby and the special stone. Exhibited at the Great Exhibition in London in 1851, Whitby Jet’s reputation continued among high-profile royals, and in 1861 Queen Victoria wore Whitby Jet pieces to commemorate and mourn her late husband, Albert.

An extended period of time is required for the natural formation of Whitby Jet, an organic gemstone. The gemstone is made from the fossilized wood of the ancient Araucaria tree, also known as the monkey puzzle tree, which once decorated the entire northeast coast of England. Following the death of the tree, it became driftwood that washed out to sea and eventually sank to the ocean floor and became covered in a mixture of sediment, decaying organisms, and detritus. This combination alongside pressure and oxygen lacking within the water caused the wood to fossilize into the solid black Jet stone we all know and love, over a period of 180 million years.

The stone in question has gained immense popularity among the Gothic community for its unique and distinct features. The dark, bold, intense black tone, paired with the mirror-like shine on its surface, makes the stone a perfect fit for the Gothic style. Our Gothic collection is designed with the finest, naturally sourced gemstones, including Whitby Jet amongst other beautiful gemstones with unique qualities. We draw inspiration from all things spooky and scary, featuring spiders, skulls, bats, and snakes to honour the Gothic events in Whitby throughout the year. Whitby is a seaside town that is known for inspiring the horror novel, Dracula, and it is the same place where we source our Whitby Jet gemstones. We take great pride in our Gothic jewellery collection, and every piece is designed with utmost attention to detail to ensure that it meets the highest standards of quality. Whether you're looking for a statement piece or something subtle, our collection has something for everyone.
