Reserved only for the British public, Swiss watch manufacturer Breitling has launched a new Superocean 44 Special Edition watch showcasing a unique blue bezel and black dial combo, a 44mm steel case, 1,000 metre water resistance and their COSC-certified Breitling Calibre 17 movement.
Breitling are famous for having one of the longest and most distinguished aviation heritages in the luxury watch industry, but that does not mean we should overlook their other collections – like that of their divers’ watches. The Breitling Superocean is the flagship of their diving range, first developed during the 1950’s following an increase in demand from scientists and deep-sea divers wanting to explore our oceans further than ever before. In 1957, Breitling launched two Superocean diving watches at once, the first known as Ref.1004, a time-only piece, and Ref.807, a chronograph. Over the years, the collection has expanded and evolved to satiate the wrists of modern-day gentlemen with one of the model’s biggest overhauls happening in 2019. It was here that the Breitling Superocean was modernised to include cleaner, more refined dials and larger Arabic numerals for better legibility as well as sleeker case designs still incredibly robust for an entry-level divers watch.
Today, that collection expands once again, this time with a special edition UK exclusive model. The new Breitling Superocean 44 watch maintains much of the same specifications as previous releases post-2019 other than a new black dial and blue bezel combination. The blue steel bezel is still unidirectional and ratcheted allowing for easy manipulation even while wearing thick divers gloves. The 60 minute scale is also raised and finished in contrasting white, pairing with a luminous triangle marker at the 12 o’clock position. The case of the Breitling Superocean 44 Special Edition continues to impress with a 1,000 metre water resistant rating helped by a screw in crown, screwed down case back and crown guards.
The Breitling Superocean 44 UK Exclusive watch sits on the wrist at 44 millimetres in diameter and to a height of 14.3mm, all engineered from stainless steel. A combination of brushed and polished surfaces complete the design which extend down the matching three-row link stainless steel bracelet. Alternatively, you can order the Superocean 44 watch on a black rubber strap embossed with the Breitling logo, and like the bracelet, this closes by a folding buckle with push button release. The case also features convex sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective treatment on both sides for easy legibility of the dial beneath.
As for the dial of the Breitling Superocean 44 Special Edition watch, a smooth matte black surface is dressed in a combination of Arabic numerals and trapezoid-shaped markers. Numerals are placed at the 12, 6 and 9 o’clock positions while the 3 o’clock space is reserved for a white date window. At the centre, matte grey hands indicate the hours and minutes while a third grey hand for the seconds stands out notably for its large red-coloured arrow-shaped pointer. All the hardware on the dial, hour markers, hands and numerals included, are coated in green-emitting Swiss Superluminova.
Powering the hours, minutes, seconds and date complication for the UK exclusive Breitling Superocean 44 watch is the COSC-certified Breitling 17 self-winding movement. It also guarantees a power reserve of 38 hours, a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and comes equipped with a total of 25 jewels.
