About Blue John
Gemstones have long been captivating jewellery lovers. Their dazzling colours and unique qualities have mythical and spiritual backgrounds, too. While some collectors wear gemstones as part of their everyday jewellery, others wear them in the form of jewellery to dispel negative energy and evil spirits. Blue John, however, stands out for its enigmatic nature and rare and wonderful beauty. The fact that the stone is made up of a variety of different colours that run throughout the stone makes each piece feel and look so different. Blue John is a variety of fluorite but is only found in a very unique location in Britain. Within the rolling hills of the Peak District, the town of Castleton lies. This area of the Peak District National Park in Derbyshire is where the formations of Blue John derive from millions of years ago. The gemstone formed during the Carboniferous period – a time when the region was, in fact, submerged under ancient seas. The movement of minerals and fluids, together with heat and pressure helped provide the optimal conditions for Blue John to form. Flourite crystals developed, acquiring the bands and patterns of white, blue, yellow and purple that we see in modern jewellery pieces today.
