What is a self-winding watch?

What is a self-winding watch?

A self-winding watch, also known as an automatic watch, is a mechanical timepiece that is powered by the motions of the wearer.

Unlike quartz watches that are powered by battery or manual-winding watches that are powered solely by turning the crown, self-winding watches are powered by the kinetic energy created as you move your wrist.

Self winding watches have a component within them called the oscillating rotor. This can sometimes be seen through the exhibition case back of an automatic watch. This semi-circular piece is affected by gravity and as you walk along with the watch strapped to your wrist, the oscillating rotor moves back and forth. Every time the oscillating rotor moves, it begins to wind the mainspring which is where the energy which powers the watch is stored.

The average self-winding watch needs to be worn be about 8-10 hours to be fully charged. The power reserve of a self-winding watch varies from model with some boasting power reserves up to ten days.

Self winding watches are perfect for those who like to wear their watches on a daily basis. However, if you intermittently wear your watch then it is worth purchasing an automatic watch winder. Watch winders work by rotating the watch from within, keeping the oscillating rotor spinning and the power full. Automatic watch winders are also great for ensuring optimum oil circulation while providing safe storage and protection.

You can find a stunning range of self-winding watches for sale on our website and in our stores as well a fantastic range of watch winders.
