Just when we thought Garmin had mastered the hiking smartwatch with the 2019-released Garmin MARQ Adventurer, they now unveil a second-generation model with even more features and upgrades. Suitably named the Garmin MARQ 2 Adventurer, the brand’s latest exploration instrument trumps its predecessor with exciting advancements like an AMOLED display, 16 day battery life, jet lag advisor and so much more. Here’s everything you need to know about the Garmin MARQ 2 Adventurer and why it’s their best hiking smartwatch yet…
Lightweight Case & Compass Bezel
When it comes to the mass of functionality within the Garmin MARQ 2 Adventurer, it’s easy to forget how impressive the exterior is. It’s grade 5 titanium case sits incredibly lightweight on the wrist despite its imposing 46mm diameter while the luxurious hybrid leather and FKM rubber strap contours effortlessly to the skin for a comfortable finish. On top, the case presents an etched 360-degree compass bezel which can be used alongside an orienteering feature so you can navigate just as you would with a classic compass overlaid on a map.
AMOLED Touchscreen Display
One of the biggest improvements to the Garmin MARQ 2 Adventurer smartwatch is the AMOLED display. Swapping out the memory-in-pixel screen from the original with bright and responsive AMOLED is a huge improvement, and one that many hikers and explorers alike will appreciate. It displays the full-colour mapping and other features incredibly clear, all housed beneath scratch resistant sapphire crystal glass.
16 Day Battery Life
For those that like to go off the grid for weeks at a time, you’ll appreciate the 16 day battery life of the Garmin MARQ 2 Adventurer. This is another improvement on the original MARQ which promised a 12 day battery life. Alongside 16 days in smartwatch mode, you’ll get up to 21 days in Battery Saver Mode, up to 42 hours in GPS mode and up to 14 days in Expedition GPS mode.
Multi-band GNSS with SatIQ Technology
Like the previous edition, the new Garmin MARQ 2 Adventurer watch comes with multi-band GNSS including GPS, GLONASS and Galileo for better positioning that just GPS alone. For the first time, we’re also welcomed to a new technology called SatIQ. Garmin suggests this gives secures superior positioning accuracy in any environment while also optimising the device’s battery life. This means you can use the GPS functionality without worrying that your watch will be quickly drained of charge.
Jet Lag Advisor
Perfect for adventurers that like to explore all around the world, the Garmin MARQ 2 Adventurer smartwatch comes with a new jet lag advisor. This feature is designed to help you reduce the effects of jet lag, taking into account your sleep schedule and offering you a new one alongside exercise and light exposure recommendations. You can enter your travel details into the Garmin Connect smartphone app calendar and leave the rest to Garmin!
ABC Sensors
A must for any hiker, the Garmin MARQ 2 Adventurer comes with ABC sensors including an altimeter for elevation data, barometer to monitor weather and 3-axis electronic compass. The altimeter in particular work nicely together with the acclimation widget which displays your current elevation, acclimated elevation and correlated Pulse Ox, heart rate and respiration rate, so you can see how you’re holding up to the current elevation.
ClimbPro Feature
A popular piece of Garmin technology with outdoor explorers is the ClimbPro ascent planner which thankfully returns on the Garmin MARQ 2 smartwatch. This clever app allows you to see real-time information on your current and upcoming climbs, including gradient, distance and elevation gain. It can also be used to gauge your effort over the remainder of your climb.
Preloaded TopoActive Europe Maps with NetFork Map Guide
Previously, Garmin’s TopoActive Europe maps had to be manually downloaded onto your device but now with the Garmin MARQ 2 Adventurer, you’ll get them preloaded for easy of use. The maps themselves allow you to keep your adventures on track; you can view terrain contours, elevations, summits, parks, coastlines, rivers, lakes and other geographical features. You can also download additional maps via Wi-Fi easily. On top of that, a new NextFork map feature makes these maps even more glanceable giving you a heads up on what’s beyond the next turn.
