TUDOR’s New Cycling-Themed Chronograph Has Arrived – the Pelagos FXD Chrono “Cycling Edition” Watch

Jewellery & Watch News

Born for those who dare, the new TUDOR Pelagos FXD Chrono “Cycling Edition” watch is ready to take you on a ride with a new chronograph released in time for the 2024 Giro d’Italia Race

This year, to celebrate TUDOR’s very own cycling team, the Pelagos FXD has received a new aesthetic, geared for those ready to take on any daring challenge. The watch comes just in time for the Giro d’Italia 2024 bike race and features a cycling-specific tachymeter scale that shows biking speeds on the inner scale. The new watch also sports a stealthy black carbon composite case, measuring a 43mm diameter and comes fitted on the brand’s popular black jacquard-woven technical fabric strap for optimum comfort.

TUDOR and Cycling

TUDOR’s Pro Cycling team is taking part for the first time in the Giro d’Italia 2024 bike race this year, bringing a wealth of expertise and stamina to the starting line. Hoping to claim a victory, the team comprises; Alberto Dainese, Robin Froidevaux, Alexander Kamp, Alexander Krieger, Marius Mayrhofer, Michael Storer, Florian Stork, and Matteo Trentin. Amongst the team are those with experience in hillier terrain, as well as teammates who have secured multiple Grand Tour stage victories. Meticulously crafted to meet the demands of the sport, but also to suffice as a daily beater for general adventures on the road, TUDOR adopts the faithful features and characteristics of the Alinghi Red Bull Racing watch, also part of the Pelagos FXD line. The cycling race itself, which first began back in 1909, has run continually albeit with the exception of both World Wars and runs for approximately 23-24 days, with three rest days included. Standing for “The Tour of Italy”, the multiple-stage bicycle race has grown over the years.

Initially holding the event open specifically to Italian participants only, the race has since grown and expanded, and now welcomes participants from all over the world (mainly UCI WorldTeams). Throughout the Giro bike race, the route will take participants through the Alps and runs throughout the month of May. To assist the victory-hungry cyclists of the TUDOR Pro Cycling Team with their challenging route, the Pelagos FXD watch is super tough and durable. Launched in 2021, the design honoured the partnership between the watchmaker and the French Navy. It stood out from other models within the range thanks to its case and lugs, crafted from one piece of metal. The lugs, which are “fixed” are used as a reference in the name of this model, eradicating the risk of the strap ever loosening and falling off the wrist. The Pelagos FXD, although only water resistant to 200 meters, has an attractive profile and an appealing spec list that combines aesthetics with functionality in perfect balance. This specific model also features a COSC-certified mechanical movement and a tachymeter that reads from a cycling-specific speed scale.

The New TUDOR Pelagos FXD Chrono “Cycling Edition”

The new TUDOR Pelagos FXD Chrono “Cycling Edition” watch has been built with purpose. Inspired by the way TUDOR’s watchmakers build their timepieces, this new tool combines time measurement with speed measurement. Assisting with hours of training required of the team, this timepiece has gone through hours of testing. TUDOR’s Pro Cycling team can utilise this watch to push boundaries and secure its many victories. The case has been crafted from carbon composite and measures a 43mm diameter, promising 200 meters of water resistance and a strong sapphire crystal glass top. The material, promising scratch-resistant and anti-reflective qualities, protects the surface of a sleek black dial adorned with red accents that nod to the Pro Cycling team’s livery. Designed for complete legibility, professional cyclists only need to glance quickly at the dial and both time and speed can be measured instantly. This, in part, is thanks to the snowflake hands crafted from luminous ceramic and the square-shaped hour markers, adorned with lashings of Super-LumiNova. The chronograph counters placed at 3 and 9 o’clock offering a 45-minute timer and the running seconds, combine beautifully with a date window nestled at 6 o’clock and a red-coated central chronograph second hand. Around the flange of the dal is an angled rehaut that features a cycling-specific tachymeter. The inner scale of the track measures cycling speeds so that the distance travelled can be easily measured.

Underneath the dial of this new TUDOR Pelagos FXD Chrono “Cycling Edition” watch is the in-house developed automatic Caliber MT5813. The movement performs at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour and delivers a power reserve of 70 hours once fully wound. The movement provides central hours and minutes, a running seconds sub-dial at 9 o’clock, chronograph seconds, and 45-minute totaliser at 3 o’clock, and a date function at 6 o’clock. A tungsten openwork monobloc rotor is also incorporated into the movement, which promises an accuracy of -2 to +4 seconds a day. The COSC-certified movement boasts a column wheel mechanism and vertical clutch, as well as exclusive finishes, all protected inside the robustness of TUDOR’s carbon composite case.
