Continuing their partnership for another year, Swiss watchmaker TAG Heuer and major global oil company Gulf launch their latest special edition timepiece for Watches & Wonders 2023. The new TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph X Gulf watch combines Gulf’s iconic blue and orange with a 43mm steel case and a Swiss made quartz movement.
TAG Heuer and Gulf have enjoyed a long-standing relationship that goes further back than their first official collaborative timepiece in 2018. Gulf became the main sponsor of the John Wyer Automotive team back in 1969, adorning the team’s race cars with their blue and orange stripes as they won the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1969, and 1975. During this time, TAG Heuer also became the official timekeeper for the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and their luxury watches were often seen on the wrists of the John Wyer Automotive team members. In 2018 however, the pair decided to officially combine their passions for motorsports and their commitment to innovation and excellence by launching a TAG Heuer X Gulf Monaco watch, limited to just 50 pieces. Ever since, the duo has created colourful sports watches for racers and spectators alike, with their latest instalment being the 2023 TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph X Gulf watch.
The new TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph X Gulf watch follows in the footsteps of the current line-up of 43mm, quartz-powered Formula 1 watches in the Swiss watchmaker’s portfolio. The 43mm case is engineered from durable stainless steel and assures a 200 metre water resistant rating thanks to the screw in crown at 3 o’clock and screw down case back. To mark its special edition status, the latter is handsomely engraved with the Gulf logo and the fixed blue aluminium bezel presents the emblem at the 1 o’clock position. The bezel is slightly knurled and decorated with a white printed tachymeter scale which can be used to measure the speed of a vehicle over a known distance.
Beneath scratch resistant sapphire crystal glass, the TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph X Gulf watch presents a new dial for the Formula 1 collection. The blue sunray-finished display is adorned with the iconic light blue and orange stripes of the Gulf brand and navy blue subsidiary dials for the small seconds and chronograph counters. These accents of blue and orange can be spotted all around the watch including on the rubber ring of the 2 o’clock chronograph pusher, on the TAG Heuer logo positioned at 12 o’clock on the bezel, on the hands and markers of the chronograph counters, on the central chronograph seconds hand and on the sloped minutes track. The dial of the TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph X Gulf watch also presents large Arabic numerals and skeletonised hour and minute hands coated in Superluminova.
There is no shortage of functionality on the dial of the TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph X Gulf watch. The three hands at the centre display the hours, minutes and central chronograph seconds while the three subsidiary dials allow you to track the continuous seconds and measure 1/10th second and 30 minutes using the chronograph pushers. There’s also a date window subtly integrated at the 4 o’clock position. These complications are powered by a high-precision, Swiss made quartz movement. Completing the TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph X Gulf watch is a three-row link stainless steel bracelet and a double-folding security clasp.
