Appealing to the ongoing trend of colourful watch dials while honouring the nostalgic standardised racing colours of 1900’s motorsport, TAG Heuer launches a bold, bright and youthful series of Formula 1 watches dressed in green, yellow and red. Suitably referred to as the TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph Racing Colour watches, the trio add some excitement and pizazz to the typically monochromatic sports watch series.
The Case
Sitting on the wrist at 43mm wide, the stainless steel cases of the new TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph Racing Colour watches feel very familiar to previous editions in the collection. The fully-brushed C-shaped case design conforms effortlessly against the skin helped by the curved and integrated lugs. Contrasting aggressively to the steel is a black PVD knurled crown, protected by steel crown guards, and matching black pushers for the chronograph. On top, the case also presents a resolutely modern gear-toothed fixed bezel, also engineered from black PVD, adorned with a sporty tachymeter scale. The TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph Racing Colour watches also deliver sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective treatment, a screw down case back engraved with the iconic chequered flag motif and a robust water resistant rating of 200 metres.
The Dial
The real novelty of the TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph Racing Colour watches is their dials. TAG Heuer explains that the colours elected here take inspiration from the original standardised racing colours used in motorsport during the 1900’s, with each nation assigned its own colour. For example, British Racing Green for the United Kingdom, Rosso Corsa for Italy and Yellow for Belgium. It is these three shades that are brought to life on the displays of the TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph Racing Colour watches presented with a sunburst decoration. All three models come with the same basic layout including rhodium-plated Superluminova baton hands, a combination of applied indexes and Arabic numerals, a date window at 4 o’clock and three black azurage subsidiary dials for the small seconds and chronograph counters.
A closer look however and the dials of each TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph Racing Colour watch offers some slightly different accents. For example, the TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph Red watch opts for contrasting white accents on the subsidiary dial rings and chronograph seconds hand. In contrast, the TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph Green watch elects indexes and hands in black, a lacquered white chronograph seconds and red borders around counters. Lastly, the TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph Yellow watch nominates matching yellow counter rings and an unmissable red lacquered chronograph hand.
The Movement
Fuelling the TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph Racing Colour watches is the Ronda 5040D quartz chronograph movement, a Swiss made calibre we’ve seen plenty of times before in the brand’s Formula 1 line-up. It delivers central hands for the hours, minutes and chronograph seconds, a date window at 4 o’clock and three counters for the small seconds and chronograph. The small seconds is placed at 9 o’clock while 1/10th counter sits at 6 o’clock and the 30 minutes counter at 9 o’clock.
The Strap
Completing their colourful aesthetic, the TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph watches are equipped with a textured rubber strap coloured in the same sporty hue as its dial. The straps are closed by a fine brushed stainless steel pin buckle signed off by the legendary TAG Heuer logo.
