Meet the TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional 300 Night Diver

Jewellery & Watch News

When you think of “Bond” watches, and by that we mean watches seen on the wrist of 007, most people think of the Omega Seamaster or the Rolex Submariner. One brand that rarely comes to mind is TAG Heuer, and yet as history debates, one of the Swiss watch manufacturer’s most iconic diving watches is believed to have had a fleeting appearance on the wrist of Timothy Dalton in the 1987 film The Living Daylights. The historic design has captivated collectors for decades for its all-black coated case and fully luminous dial. Now, as part of their 2021 Geneva Watch Days releases, TAG Heuer revives the design as the Aquaracer Professional 300 Night Diver.

The Bond watch in question is Reference 844, one of the very first diving watches launched by TAG Heuer back in the 1980’s. It was 37mm in diameter, quartz-powered and of course fully characterised by its unique luminous dial. The design eventually evolved into what became known as the Professional 1000 series and so it seems fitting that as part of the brand’s refreshed Professional 300 line which was launched earlier in the year, the legendary Night Diver is revived.

Just like the original, the new TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional 300 Night Diver watch features a fully luminous dial giving it almost two personalities depending on the time of day. During the day, the watch face offers a creamy white finish with contrasting black-gold coated octagonal hour markers, black-gold coated hands and a magnified date window at 6 o’clock. At night, the dial transforms, glowing endlessly thanks to it’s green Superluminova coating. The hands for the hours and minutes, the tip of the seconds hand, the hour markers and the triangle-shaped bezel marker also glow in the dark.

Completely differing from its glowing face, the TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional 300 Night Diver watch boasts a matte-finished black DLC coated stainless steel case measuring to 43mm in diameter. The same tapered lugs seen on the other Aquaracer Professional 300 are present as is the screw down crown at 3 o’clock, screw down case back and 300 metre water resistant rating. The legendary 12-sided bezel is also retained, unidirectional and with a 60 minute scale, but instead comes decorated in black coating and a black ceramic insert.

Powering the conventional complications for the hours, minutes, seconds and date is the TAG Heuer Calibre 5 movement, an automatic winding mechanism based on the Sellita SW200-1. It promises a decent power reserve of 38 hours, 26 jewels and a frequency of 28,800vph. Completing the TAG Heuer Aquaracer Professional 300 Night Diver watch is a black rubber strap detailed with the same grooves as spied on the dial and a matching black DLC coated folding buckle.
