Bringing with it a history lesson on a north-western Swiss railway and the Hölstein-based luxury watch manufacturer that resides nearby, the new Oris Big Crown Pointer Date Waldenburgerbahn watch aims to capture the affection and gratitude of the Oris team. The Waldenburgerbahn railroad has connected Oris and its talented group of employees to their home and workplace for 118 years.
In 1880, a low cost railway called the Waldenburgerbahn opened up in a secluded corner of Switzerland, running only 13 kilometres between the towns of Liestal in the north and Waldenburg in the south. Exactly 24 years later, when Oris founders Paul Cattin and Georges Christian were deciding on where to open their watch factory, the Waldenburgerbahn railway played a significant role in them choosing the Swiss town of Hölstein. In December of this year, the Waldenburgerbahn railway welcomes its biggest set of upgrades yet as it becomes a high-tech tramway, giving the area a low-carbon means of transportation. This will also help Oris deliver their own Emissions Reduction Programme. To celebrate the role this vital network continues to play in their history, Oris proudly launches the Waldenburgerbahn Limited Edition watch based on their iconic Big Crown Pointer Date model.
The Oris Big Crown Pointer Date watch was first launched in 1938 and has since become one of the brand’s most emblematic designs. It is defined by its bold red-tipped central hand which reaches out to point to the date adorned on the circumference of the dial. The Oris Big Crown Pointer Date Waldenburgerbahn Limited Edition watch is no different, electing a red pointer date hand – the only pop of colour in the entire design – for displaying the date. The complication is set upon a matte black display which exudes the traditional stylings of old-school railway pocket watches. The vintage-inspired Arabic numerals and railroad minutes track are finished in white while the elegant cathedral shaped hands are silvered and adorned with glow in the dark Superluminova.
The case of the Oris Waldenburgerbahn watch also maintains the characteristics of the Big Crown Pointer Date collection with domed sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective treatment, an oversized pill-box crown at 3 o’clock and a coin edge bezel. The bezel is fixed and the crown is screw down allowing for a 50 metre water resistant rating. The entire exterior is engineered from stainless steel with a combination of bright polished and brushed finishing. The case measures to 40mm wide and when turned over reveals an ornate engraving of the case back. An inscription reads “Waldenburgerbahn Limited Edition” and is joined by its limited edition status out of 1,000 pieces. Completing the case is a brown deer leather strap which has been created by Cervo Volante, a sustainable deer leather manufacturer. The strap is fitted with a stainless steel pin buckle and a quick change strap system.
Finally, powering the Oris Big Crown Pointer Date Waldenburgerbahn watch is the Oris 754 automatic winding movement. It offers the four central hands for the hours, minutes, seconds and pointer date. We’re also warranted a healthy 38 hour power reserve, frequency of 28,800vph and 26 jewels.
