The Longines Heritage watch collection is one of our favourites and is full of impeccable designs inspired by historic Longines models. Their new Longines Heritage Military 1938 Limited Edition is no different as it brings back to life an “Officer’s watch” from the late 1930’s worn by soldiers during World War II. Many of the original’s hallmark design elements have been passed over including the classic subsidiary seconds dial at 6 o clock, large legible numerals and a smooth black dial. Alongside its retro aesthetic, we are treated to a contemporary manual winding movement.
The specifications of the original Longines Heritage Military 1938 watch were designed to provide reliability, accuracy and legibility on the battlefield – something that it succeeded in doing. The new Heritage Military 1938 Limited Edition continues to honour its predecessor’s aspiration with a design that uses the very same stylings alongside a new and more accurate mechanical movement with manual winding capacity. The Swiss made calibre is wound by the era-accurate crown at 9 o clock designed in the legendary ‘sea urchin’ shape which many described as being like a classic onion crown that has been flattened slightly. The shape of the crown has been perfectly mirrored from the original to its new counterpart.
The manual winding L507 calibre is based on the well-known ETA 6498 movement and promises a frequency of 21'600 vibrations per hour and is equipped with 17 jewels. The movement also provides classic central hands for hour and minutes, a subsidiary seconds dial at 6 o clock and a power reserve of 53 hours. Each of the functions are displayed on a striking black matte dial decorated with painted Arabic numerals and silvered polished hands coated in Swiss Superluminova in a vintage lume colour.
Continuing to do its precursor justice, the Longines Heritage Military 1938 Limited Edition comes presented in a stunning polished stainless steel case measuring to 43mm in size. The case is also fitted with short but perfectly shaped lugs that allow the grey-toned vintage inspired leather strap to sit comfortably on the wrist. The strap is fitted with a classic stainless steel pin buckle. The model continues to impress with a closed stainless steel case back to ensure its water resistance of 30 metres and high quality scratch resistant glass treated with an anti-reflective coating.
