The current IWC watch collections include the Portugieser, the Pilots, the Da Vinci, the Aquatimer, the Ingenieur and the Portofino. All are distinctively different to the other, but the IWC Portofino family in particular is instantly recognisable for its sleek case designs and uncluttered dials home to traditional Roman numerals and slim feuille shaped hands. Over the years, we have seen several IWC Portofino watches introduced to the series including the iconic the Portofino Hand Wound, the Portofino Moonphase and of course, the Portofino Chronograph. Before this week, the chronograph model was only available in a 42 millimetre diameter but in appreciation of those with smaller wrists, the Swiss watch manufacturer has officially launched a trio of new IWC Portofino Chronograph with 39mm cases.
The three new IWC Portofino Chronograph 39 watches are follow suit in their size, case material and movement but differ in their strap and dial colourways. The first piece in the new collection is the IWC Portofino Chronograph 39 watch under reference IW391404 which pairs the 39 millimetre stainless steel case with a black dial, rose gold-plated hands and appliques and a brown alligator leather strap. The second IW391405 opts for a forest green dial with rhodium plated hands and appliques and a matching green alligator leather strap. Finally, the IWC Portofino Chronograph under reference IW391406 boasts a silver-plated dial, rose gold plated hands and appliques and a black alligator leather strap.
All three IWC Portofino Chronograph 39 watches are engineered from polished stainless steel and retain all the classic elements of the Portofino family including sleek lugs, a slim unadorned bezel and convex sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective treatment on the inside. The dials are detailed with a sunray brushed finishing and adorned with the archetypal Roman numerals, feuille-shaped hands and two subsidiary counters perfectly balanced at the 12 and 6 o’clock positions. The watches also promise a 30 metre water resistant rating helped by a screw down case back.
Like the impressive exterior of each IWC Portofino Chronograph 39 watch, the interior upholds the brand’s exceptional reputation for luxury watch manufacture. The Calibre 79350 automatic winding movement is engineered from 240 components in total and bases its construction on the Valjoux 7750, a globally trusted chronograph movement. It delivers two totalisers for the 30 minutes chronograph counter and the small seconds and three central hands for hours, minutes and chronograph seconds. The IWC Portofino Chronograph 39 watches also come with 25 jewels, a 44 hour power reserve and a frequency of 28,800vph.
