Jewellery & Watch News
Certina have always had a certain dexterity when it comes to creating handsome, affordable and robust watches for everyday wear. In keeping with this attitude, the Swiss watch manufacturer have launched a series of additions to their iconic DS collection. Following suit to the DS Chronograph Automatic from 2020 which took inspiration from a retro Certina watch from the 1940’s, the new Certina DS Powermatic 80 watch collection delivers a stunning set of vintage codes alongside the contemporary Powermatic 80 automatic winding movement.
If you’ve come across Certina watches before, then you’ll have likely heard of their famous DS concept already. But just in case, here’s the low down. Otherwise known as Double Security, the Certina DS concept was first introduced in 1959 and ensures every Certina DS watch boasts five key attributes: sapphire crystal glass, an O-ring on the setting stem, two O-ring seals on the crown, a special seal in the case back and a reinforced case back. This incredible concept has ensured that every Certina DS watch since has remained robust and durable. The new Certina DS Powermatic 80 watches for 2021 deliver just this alongside some stunning retro-inspired aesthetics.
There are currently six watches in the new Certina DS Powermatic 80 collection, each with a case diameter of 41mm, a height of 10.9mm, slim curved lugs and a screw in crown at 3 o’clock. They can withstand water pressure up to 100 metres and as the DS concept pledges, sapphire crystal glass protects the dial. In this case, the glass is box-shaped and treated with an anti-reflective coating for dial readability in all conditions. The dials of each Certina DS Powermatic 80 differ in their colourway but are all slightly domed and adorned with several vintage design cues for a wonderful retro finish. These include skeletonised sword-shaped hands and arrow shaped hour markers. For a modern touch, the tips of both the hour and minute hand and hour markers are detailed with a dot of Superluminova.
As their names entail, each Certina DS Powermatic 80 watch comes equipped with the Powermatic 80 movement. Developed by the Swatch Group and used by several other of the luxury watch brand’s under that umbrella, the calibre is engineered with a Nivachron balance spring for excellent anti-magnetism and promises a substantial shock resistance. The Powermatic 80’s biggest claim to fame however is its high power reserve of 80 hours assured by it’s reduced frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour. The Swiss made movement also provides classic hours, minutes, seconds and date complication.
So where do the Certina DS Powermatic 80 watches differ? Ultimately, in their case, dial and strap colourways. First up in the collection is model C038.407.36.367.00 which with its yellow gold PVD coated case, matching gilt-coloured dial and brown calfskin leather strap is arguably the most retro of the lot. Similiarly, reference C038.407.38.037.00 delivers a rose gold PVD case, a crisp white dial and a comfortable textile strap striped in navy, orange and white. Reference C038.407.18.047.00 offers the very same textile strap with a navy blue dial and stainless steel case while model C038.407.18.037.00 opts for a plain khaki green textile strap, white dial and stainless steel case. Next is C038.407.36.087.00 with a rose gold PVD case, warm brown dial and brown leather strap. Last but not least, reference C038.407.16.097.00 is one of the dressier of the bunch with a dark green sunray dial, stainless steel case and coffee-brown leather strap.
