In what we already foreshadow as one of their best-selling lines of 2022, Longines have introduced the GMT complication into their aviation-inspired Spirit collection. Suitably named the Longines Spirit Zulu Time, the collection delivers a trio of pilot’s watches delivering all the classic codes of the genre with a large, legible GMT hand at the centre.
The Longines Spirit watch collection was launched in 2020 and draws from the Swiss watch manufacturer’s vast aviation heritage to celebrate pilots, pioneers and sportsmen who have relied on Longines’ pilots watches in the past. The series began as a range of time-and-date only models distinctive for their large knurled crowns, instantly readable faces and COSC certified automatic movements signified by five stars imprinted on the dial. Shortly after, the Longines Spirit Chronograph was launched which also debuted the design for the first time in titanium. Now, timed in line with the Watches & Wonders event starting next week, Longines has launched the new Longines Spirit Zulu Time collection with a second time zone complication.
As you’d expect, the biggest change to the new Longines Spirit Zulu Time watch is that of its GMT hand. Set at the centre of three different dial colours, matte black, sandblasted anthracite or sunray-brushed blue, the large arrow-shaped hand stands out in a contrasting colour. For the black dial, the hand is finished in blue, the anthracite dial in gold and the blue dial opts for an orange GMT hand. The hardware reaches out to a 24 hour-scale decorated on the ceramic insert bezel and is adorned with Superluminova to match that of the applied Arabic numerals, diamond-shaped markers and baton hands. To match with all previous Spirit models, the Longines Spirit Zulu Time watches showcases the brand’s winged hour-glass logo and five stars in relief.
Set beside sapphire crystal glass with anti-reflective coating on both sides, the bi-directional rotating bezel differs in colour depending on the dial tone chosen. The Longines Spirit Zulu Time watch with a black dial opts for a matching black bezel while the blue dial follows suit with a matching blue toned bezel. Our favourite model out of the trio is the anthracite grey dial with stands out with its green ceramic insert bezel and contrasting gold hardware. The rest of the collection’s architecture meets our expectations with a 42mm stainless steel case, 13.9mm height, screw in crown and water resistant rating of 100 metres.
Housed within the case and hidden behind a screw down case back, the Longines Spirit Zulu Time watches present the L844.4 automatic winding movement. As expected, the calibre has been COSC certified and features a silicon balance spring for anti-magnetism. It also provides an impressive 72 hour power reserve, 25,200 vibrations per hour, hours, minutes and seconds, a date window at 6 o’clock and of course, the 24-hour hand. Completing the Longines Spirit Zulu Time watches is a choice of a leather strap or a three link stainless steel bracelet, both are fitted with interchangeable systems for an easy swap over.
