The Breitling Top Time watch returns with a vintage-inspired Deus Limited Edition model of just 1500 pieces…
Coinciding with a brand-new partnership with lifestyle brand, Deus Ex Machina, Swiss watch manufacturer, Breitling celebrates the launch of its new Top Time Deus Limited Edition watch with a new role – official timekeeper for the Deus Swank Rally. Not just for bikers, however, this 42mm stainless steel Breitling watch is in a genre of its own, uniting surfers, sportsmen, boarders, digital nomads and of course, lovers of Breitling watches.
Quintessentially, the new Breitling Top Time Deus Limited Edition is a racing-inspired wristwatch packed with a full spec of innovative features and successful Breitling hallmarks. Defined as a watch to “…explore the world your way, at your pace” its design is backed by the people behind Deus Ex Machina – an Australian business founded in 2006. Deus Ex Machina unites a passion for vintage motorcycles and quality clothing. Inclusiveness, authenticity and enthusiasm are words chosen by the company to describe its ethos under the Deus name.
History of the Breitling Top Time watch
The return of the fabled Top Time name and its distinctive dial design couldn’t have come at a better time. Just last year we saw Breitling release of the Top Time Limited Edition in steel – a close representation of the official 1964 model albeit with a redesigned case. Its “Zorro” (or bowtie) dial remains a favourite vintage chronograph style, which first cropped up in the Breitling Chronomat models of the 1940s. For reasons that need no explanation, Breitling remains true to this favourable racing-infused design with the launch of the new Top Time Deus Limited Edition watch to mark the start of 2021. Its moderate growth from 38mm to 41mm is a welcomed feature, as is its appeal to a whole new demographic, with light and dark injections of orange adding a bold twist to its otherwise classic silver backdrop. Later, Top Time models eventually acquired the “Top Time” lettering on their dials and remained a direct target for the racing market long after production ceased.
Breitling Top Time Deus Limited Edition
Exclusive to 1500 pieces, the new Breitling Top Time Deus Limited Edition watch pays homage to the motorcycle championship that takes place all over the world. Vintage bikes race in the Deus Swank Rally, which occurs in diverse locations within France, Italy. Australia and Bali to name just a few. Hawaiian competitive surfer, Sierra Lerback and French motorcycle engineer and designer, Jeremy Tagand also share the views of Breitling’s Deus squad and have both been involved in the Deus Ex Machina company for a few years now.
With a clear retro vibe, the new Breitling Top Time chronograph watch sports squircle-shaped chronograph counters in black. The “In benzin veritas” adage is off-set in white against a sleek black tachymeter scale and the silver dial is adorned with a set of legible Super-LumiNova coated hands and stick hour markers. The punchy orange accents are a nice touch to the watch’s black and silver tones, especially the small hands of the 1/4th of a second and 30-minute sub-counters at 3 and 9 o’clock. One particularly interesting element seen in the dial of the Top Time Deus Limited Edition watch is its lightning bolt-inspired chronograph hand – a nod to the speed and adrenaline experienced on the racing track. The hand is operated via the polished push-pieces located at 2 and 4 o’clock on the watch’s case.
Breitling has always used third party movements in the design of its Top Time models. The new Limited Edition Deus watch is equipped with the Breitling Caliber 23 – a self-winding automatic movement that measures a 30mm diameter inside its solid steel housing. The movement is built from a unilateral with ball-bearing structure and features an oscillating pinion. Capable of delivering a 48-hour power reserve, the Breitling 23 Calibre beats to the rhythm of 28,800 vibrations per hour and is certified to COSC standards of accuracy.
Held inside a tough 30-meter water-resistant steel case, the movement is protected from shock, nicks, bumps, moisture, heat and light damage behind a snapped caseback. A non-screw-locked crown equipped with one gasket completes the design of the watch’s case. To solidify Breitling’s links to the motorcycle industry, a vintage motorcyclist engraved in Deus artwork is etched into the surface of the watch’s steel caseback, designed by Carby Tuckwell - creative director for Deus. Completing the retro-imbued look of the Deus watch, Breitling has chosen a brown racing-themed calfskin strap to secure to the wrist with a stainless steel pin buckle.
