Garmin MARQ Captain In-Depth Review

Jewellery & Watch News

For those that see the ocean as their second home, the Garmin MARQ Captain smartwatch may just be the wrist-based boating tool you’ve been looking for. Inspired by those that own the Regatta, the MARQ Captain is designed with advanced nautical and smart features that are not found in any other traditional timepiece including a revolutionary regatta timer enhanced with GPS technology, tack assist, man overboard button, stunning nautical details and much, much more!

Since its release last year, the Garmin MARQ smartwatch collection has effectively filled the gap in the market for those worrying less about budget and more on luxury aesthetic and demanding functionality. The collection currently consists of seven key models: the MARQ Athlete, Driver, Adventurer, Commander, Aviator, Golfer and of course the Captain. Each design has been purposely engineered to meet the needs of its specific wearer, with the Garmin MARQ Captain smartwatch designed especially for explorers of the sea. Let’s take a look at some of its functionality in more detail…

BOATING FEATURES

If there’s one thing the Garmin MARQ Captain promises, it’s unbeatable boating features. Whether you’re out at sea for your own pleasure or taking part in a regatta, this smartwatch ensures even the most masterful tactician delivers exceptional performance in every situation. The Regatta timer allows you to pinpoint starts with a countdown timer that shows time to the gun and when combined with the enhanced GPS technology, it even calculates your ideal position to win. Meanwhile, the Tack assist feature shows you wind shifts at your wrist so you know for certain if you’re getting headed or lifted, and you can optimise your course and sail trim for maximum speed.

For those that sail the seas purely for pleasure, the Garmin MARQ Captain watch ensures you’re kept safe and on route in all conditions. The unique Man Overboard feature allows you to mark a man overboard with a single press while the directional arrow and distance countdown helps execute a swift and effortless recovery. The Garmin MARQ Captain is also home to all the boat data you could possibly need and is accessible wherever you are on the vessel. Add waypoints to your chart plotter remotely and access the GHC 20 autopilot control unit for autopilot control to change heading, turn and steer the boat. Last but not least, the boating wearable is compatible with the Fusion-Link Lite App so you can control your StereoActive products as well as other compatible products enabled with ANT+ wireless technology.

CASE & STRAP

To pair with your sophisticated boating gear, the Garmin MARQ Captain smartwatch boasts a stunning rich nautical blue colour scheme which includes a navy ceramic bezel and a jacquard weave strap. The strap is particularly impressive, not only for its exceptional craftsmanship made by artisans in the south of France but for its unbeatable comfort and water resistance. The ceramic bezel also features a regatta timer to make prediction starts virtually automatic and it is the first of its kind, giving skippers the ability to hit the starting line at the exact moment and in the ideal position.

The 46mm case is engineered from exquisite brushed titanium, renowned for its lightweight and scratch resistant properties. The case is also paired with scratch resistant sapphire crystal glass which protects the 240 x 240 pixels resolution display and assists in the piece’s water resistant rating of 100 metres. On the classic jacquard weave strap, the Garmin MARQ Captain watch weighs an unassuming 88g and only 95g if you choose to add a silicon strap.

FITNESS & GPS FEATURES

For days when you want to explore land, the Garmin MARQ Captain smartwatch comes with a fantastic selection of fitness apps and location features. The wrist based heart rate monitor, which can uniquely record your pulse underwater, is ready to help you gauge how hard you work while the Pulse Ox monitor will help you gain awareness of how well your body’s oxygen levels are adjusting when exploring the thinner air at higher altitudes and provide warnings if you need to acclimatise before reaching further heights.

The Garmin MARQ Captain also features one of Garmin’s newest training features, the PacePro function. The useful training feature allows users to enter custom start and finish points and a target competition times. This means that the watch will tell you exactly how fast you should be aiming to run to complete each mile and ultimately reach your goal. The Pace Pro function even considers hills and slopes for ultimate training awareness. The multiple global navigation satellite systems including GPS, GLONASS and Galileo allow you to  venture out into more difficult environments than just relying on GPS alone while the handy ABC sensors also help you navigate your route with an altimeter for elevation data, barometer to monitor weather and 3-axis electronic compass for direction. For days of ‘rest’, the Garmin MARQ Captain has access to over 41,000 full-colour golf courses around the world as well as 2,000 worldwide ski resorts.

With up to 12 days of battery life in smartwatch mode, the Garmin MARQ Captain can be safely relied on in all conditions. Even in GPS mode, the battery promises up to 28 hours of power, 48 hours in UltraTrac mode and 9 hours with GPS and music. For days when battery life becomes essential, the Power Manager feature will offer suggestions to save your battery such as turning off certain apps like music or maps.

SOCIAL & WELLBEING FEATURES

While you’re busy taking care of your boat, the Garmin MARQ Captain helps take care of you with a fantastic range of wellness features. The Stress Score monitor keeps track of your heart rate as well as your heart rate variability to calculate a stress score and warn you of when you may need some down time. Respiration tracking also keeps on top of your breathing throughout the day, during sleep and during breathwork and yoga activities, similarly offering advice on relaxation improvements.
