Jewellery & Watch News
Following on from the success of the Breitling Navitimer Re-edition from last year, the Swiss watch manufacturer has now announced the release of the Breitling AVI Ref. 765 1953 Re-Edition, a stunning limited edition that takes inspiration from a historic 1953 aviator watch.
Known as the “Co-Pilot”, the 1950’s pilot watch had a bold look with a ratcheted rotating bezel and oversized Arabic numerals on the dial. It’s impressive legibility and sleek aesthetic was an interpretation of the onboard clocks preciously designed and produced by Breitling’s Huit Aviation Department in the 1930’s. The watch became a favourite among aviators for its rugged construction and reliability during challenging aerial activity. Because of its significant place in history, Breitling have ensured that the new Breitling AVI Ref. 765 1953 Re-Edition has been carefully researched and crafted as close as possible to its historic counterpart.
“It was always clear to us that long-time Breitling fans would embrace these re-edition watches. But it’s also exciting to see how strongly they appeal to people who are new to our brand – they can take one look at a Re-Edition and see how much living history, innovation, and cool luxury we can pack into a single watch.” - Georges Kern, CEO of Breitling
The dial of the Breitling AVI Ref. 765 1953 watch looks identical to the original, decorated in a textured black finish with hand applied Superluminova hands and numerals. The colour of the lume has been carefully chosen to recall the very same colour on the original while the thin syringe-shaped hands also match exactly. The 41mm stainless steel case also remains the same with a bi-directional bezel with 12 hour pilots scale secured by three screws also placed in identical position as the 1953 model. Surprisingly, Breitling have also stayed loyal to the design and material of the glass, opting for domed Hesaite crystal and refusing the temptation of higher quality sapphire.
It is quite remarkable how well Breitling have stood their ground with this design and kept the look of new Breitling AVI Ref. 765 1953 Re-edition so close to its predecessor. The only details noted to have changed are the improved water resistance rating to 300 metres, the removal of the word “GENEVE” on the dial and the manual winding movement used within. The contemporary Swiss made calibre, the Breitling B09, is hand wound like the original, COSC certified and provides all the same functionality: central hands for hours, minutes and central chronograph seconds, 15 minutes counter, 12 hours counter and subsidiary seconds.
The Breitling AVI Ref. 765 1953 Re-edition watch is presented on a stunning vintage inspired black leather strap with white stitch detailing and a classic stainless steel pin buckle. The model is part of a limited series of only 1,953 pieces, an appropriate number which commemorates the year the “Co-Pilot” watch was released.
