New Watches & Wonders 2024 Release - The Montblanc Iced Sea 0 Oxygen Deep 4810 watch

Jewellery & Watch News

Capable of enduring extreme temperatures, whether underwater or at the top of the highest mountain, the new Montblanc Iced Sea 0 Oxygen Deep 4810 watch matches the distance of Mont Blanc’s 4810-meter height, but for underwater use instead.

The question remains. Did the Montblanc global managing director, Laurent Lecamp ever contemplate how successful the Iced Sea watch series would be when it launched back in 2022? I’d like to say yes. Confidence in a design is integral to collector retention in a brand, but I honestly don’t think anyone had any idea how well the design would be received across the board. The Iced Sea watch is ruggedly handsome and built to face any challenge it is met with. On top of that, the dial captivates, with a uniquely textured surface inspired by the majestic beauty of the Mer de Glace – the largest glacier on the slopes of Mont Blanc’s massif. It’s also one of the biggest attractions in the Chamonix Valley, measuring at a height of 7km long and 200 meters deep. The Iced Sea watch is also primed for adventure seekers and mountaineers, some of whom are famous. The intrepid alpinist Reinhold Messner, for example, summited the highest peaks (Mt Everest) without the supplementation of oxygen, hence the inspiration for the brand’s 0 Oxygen concept as seen here in the new Montblanc Iced Sea 0 Oxygen Deep 4810 watch.

4,810 Meters Up – 4,810 Meters Down

As you may have guessed from its name, this dive watch takes on the aesthetics of the Iced Sea watch family but is water-resistant to 4,810 meters underwater. If you weren’t already aware, 4,810 meters is the distance to the top of Mont Blanc – the mountain from which this prestigious watchmaker takes its name. Since 1913, Montblanc has been using an iconic emblem as a trademark for its designs. The star emblem in white represents a bird’s eye view of the snow-capped mountain, with the six points representing the glaciers that define this majestic location.

The new model, which goes by the name of the Montblanc Iced Sea 0 Oxygen Deep 4810 watch, compensates for its broad 43mm diameter and its hefty persona with a lightweight titanium case. Its depth of 19.4mm gives it a muscular physique that is attention-demanding, to say the least. But the beauty of this watch is certainly in its boldness and its powerful aesthetic. The side of the case, where the fluted screw-down crown resides, is marked with the iconic Montblanc emblem. It’s also accompanied by a crown protection guard to help uphold its 4,810-meter water resistance. The case is also executed with a mix of polished bevels and lugs and a vertical satin-brushed finish. But wait until you turn it over…

Flipping the new Montblanc Iced Sea 0 Oxygen Deep 4810 watch over reveals a titanium caseback that has been adorned with a unique technique to give it a look of swirling, rushing icy waters. A wavy 3D pattern has been achieved by a laser-generated oxidisation process, giving the metal a mix of matte and shiny surfaces. This compliments the surface of the dial perfectly, which has also undergone a special treatment. An old Montblanc technique known as gratté boisé creates a sfumato effect and is the same technique seen in the dial of the newly released Montblanc 1858 Geosphere CARB02 0 Oxygen watch. A piece of wood is used to scrape the surface of the dial, creating scratches that echo the look of a glacier surface, including the dark blue hues that are seen in the ice when it has been in the absence of oxygen.

Surrounding this dial is a unidirectional rotating bezel filled with anodised aluminium material in black. Its design can only move in the counter-clockwise direction. This is a critical diving safety mechanism that features in most high-end dive watches. This one frames the dial perfectly with its deeply knurled edge. Both the dot at 12 o’clock and the indices on the bezel have been treated in luminous material to aid legibility in the dark. These match the luminous-coated Arabic numeral hour markers on the dial and the centrally-mounted hands that are powered by an automatic movement.

The new Montblanc Iced Sea 0 Oxygen Deep 1480 watch is outfitted with the Calibre MB 29.29, which produces a power reserve of 120 hours once fully wound. It also performs at a rate of 28,800 vibrations. Unfortunately, the movement cannot be observed in motion, since the caseback features that beautiful detailing, but this is based on a Sellita movement, so you’re certainly guaranteed values of accuracy and performance when wearing this watch.

No Oxygen

One of the key features of the new Montblanc Iced Sea 0 Oxygen Deep 4810 watch, aside from its exertional water resistance and glacier-inspired details, is the 0 Oxygen concept, which Montblanc has used before. Inspired by pioneering mountaineers, it features a tough case devoid of oxygen. The oxygen-free case is achieved by a blue seal that sits in between the case and the sapphire crystal glass front. The removal of the oxygen eradicates the risk of the glass front fogging when the watch is exposed to extreme temperatures often experienced when climbing mountains or diving deep into the oceans. Without the risk of oxidation of the components inside the case, the watch is also sure to stand the test of time.
